With MPC-HC and the majority of media players, the default settings in a setup using digital or optical audio outputs will downmix multi-channel sources to stereo and then the sound card/chip will output a multi-channel format to your A/V receiver. You won’t notice it.

In MPC-HC 'Audio switcher' I have enabled the built in audio switcher, normalize and regain volume options. In 'Audio decoder' settings the 'Audio settings' tab is at default. In the 'Mixing' I have enabled mixing and selected output speaker configuration as stereo. Center mix and surround mix levels are at default which is 0.71.

Open up MPC HC and under View -> Options go to Internal Filters and ensure that any Source Filters you want LAV used for are unchecked (so for my test I made sure Matroska and MPEG PS/TS/PVA were unchecked) Next up go to Options -> External Filters and add “LAV Splitter”, “LAV Splitter Source”, and “LAV Audio Decoder”, setting them as Prefer.
How do I get 5.1 sound to work in MPC-HC?? — Penny Arcade

When you're done, set the Realtek ALC1150 as the audio renderer in MPC-HC (under playback -> output); it will be something like "Directsound: device name (Realtek ALC1150)." You can also set the renderer again in internal filters -> audio renderer, but I think (?) that probably overrides the LAV decoder, so I would test it without touching that.
Confused about which audio renderer I should use in …

I don't want stereo in most cases and need 7.1 on the output. I also usually use the FFDshow audio decoder just as an audio processor on top of the LAV audio decoder for the mixer so I can set it to 7.1 to match up with 7.1 output speaker setting in Realtek Audio Manager, and also occasionally the freeverb and crystality filters.
