Re: No sound in mplayer. Some builds of mplayer seem to default to oss as the -ao, and oss is no longer usable/enabled in 10.10 even if you have the alsa-oss package installed. From the cli just use -ao pulse or -ao alsa. (though you could do this, no advantage, wouldn't bother, more useful for apps that must use oss.
linux - Mplayer no sound when playing some movies - Super User

Audio: no sound (similar with ac3 sound, but using the ffac3 audio codec). Trying different audio output (-ao oss/pcm/sdl) doesn't fix the problem. The strange thing is that if I play these files directly with ffplay, they work fine. mplayer sound with mp3/ogg is fine. My alsa configuration is standard (no /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asound*)

But I need Mplayer for certain videos (MPEG transport streams that don't start on a nice boundary), and I believe DVBcut uses it too. When I try to use Mplayer on any video, for instance a MPEG2 video, I get a window with no video, no audio, and the following errors: libavformat version 56.40.101 (internal) MPEG-PS file format detected.

[SOLVED] MPlayer/Pulseaudio, No audio output. I can't seem to figure out how to make mplayer's "ao=pulse" option to work. It works fine with alsa, but I couldn't find anything definitive on Google about what might be wrong. I think one of the problems might be that I couldn't find any errors in mplayer's output.
