The CD3 is a wonderfull CD player for the price, only beaten to my ears by the Naim CDX2 which has more soundstage and is more natural (more analogical if you like). It is also very reliable because it was strongly build with high grade components back in the 90s. If you buy it second hand now it is unlikely that you will get some failure !

an Audio Enthusiast. The Naim CD3 is a CD player for people who still aren't thrilled with the sound of CDs. Music flows out and is very smooth. It doesn't have an etched quality to the sound. It's great to compare vinyl vs. CD with the Naim. Finally, I have a CD player that competes with the Townshend turntable.

This CD3 sound is very dynamic, rhytmical, natural sounding. both before and even more - after lampization. Back-lit naim logo. Very narcistic The green PCB is screaming "NAIM job !!!". so fanatical about star grounding, tantalum caps and regulation by LM317. I think that using tantalum caps is a decisive factor in creation of NAIM house sound.

However, the CD3 is a favourite - as you say, not as detailed, not quite as extended in the bass, and a bit more coloured too, but in many respects even more fun. The CDM9/44 mechs seem to hold up better than the later linear sled units, with only the platter drop issue being a particular concern (but relatively easily fixed).
