You could do a complete reset on the CMOS & that could reactivate the sound device? Remove the battery (whilst powered down & battery removed obviously). You might get a re-activation of the device when the battery is re-fitted some 30 mins later when rebooted? There might be a combineation of things needed to achieve this so I will keep looking.
