However, recently both MP4 and DivX videos stopped playing the audio track. The same play properly with audio when opened with Windows Media Player, VLAN, Windows 10 Movies & TV, and Nero Platinum 2018 Media Home apps. As a test I downloaded and installed the current 10.8.6 version of the DivX Player then rebooted as instructed.

You need to use the VLC player to play movies, which is certainly the best multimedia player with support for most codecs such as MPEG-2, DivX, H.264, MKV, etc. In VLC Player, open the video file.
