Check your TV’s audio settings. Check your HDMI cable. WDTV Live has old firmware. Try upgrading to the latest (.11) via internet or try downloading from the web and upgrade using USB stick. If you have the latest and still have issues, then try using the same HDMI cable with a different TV and see if its an issue with your TV audio settings.

I agree with pawson. The issue is that you have it set to Digital Pass Through in audio. The problem is that most TVs, unless they have the DD/DTS logo on it, don’t support decoding of digital audio. Change your audio settings to Stereo on the WDTV Live. I have opened up a new thread about this as a feature request.
WD TV HD Media Player – no sound? | Another Lost Soul's Blog

Got your shiny new Western Digital WD TV media player home, plugged it in selected your mkv file and found out you don’t have any sound? This is probably due to the mkv file containing a DTS Soundtrack. At present the WD TV running firmware 1.02.07 cannot downmix DTS sound into stereo over HDMI. There are currently two solutions.

I think you are more likely to find that (as inzaman pointed out) your TV is unable to decode DTS audio which many hidef sources come with, as such if the WDTV is giving DTS over HDMI (very likely by default) then you will hear nothing without a DTS capable amplifier.
