The speaker icon on the toolbar in my Windows 7 VM has a red x on it. If you hover over it the message "No Audio Output Device is Installed" appears. I think If audio were enabled in the settings of the guest machine's Audio, then Audio device would have had an exclamation mark in the device manger guest it were still not recognised by Host OS. Once it had an exclamation mark in the device manage, you would just click 'right click' on it, and then choose updating driver automatically via internet
