So then I solved the problem by 1) disabling the realtek on-board audio in the boot menu; 2) uninstalling the soundblaster drivers and applications; 3) reinstalling soundblaster from the original Creative Vista installation CD for the card; 4) updating the Creative driver and apps from downloaded updates saved to my desktop.
