With kernel 2.6.32 in Debian unstable I get no sound from the HDMI output on my Asus M3N78-VM motherboard which has an NVidia 8200 (MCP78S) IGP. Everything looks normal according to pavucontrol, alsamixergui, aplay --list etc, but the TV stays silent. With kernel 2.6.31 or earlier it works OK.

I just downloaded the latest package from the Alsa site and extracted it, did a cofigure, make, make install and followed the rest of the steps posted at the start of the thread (the sound.conf file) and it worked. As far as HDMI audio goes, there is no such thing. You are probably confusing "HD Audio", the generic term for the RealTek, Intel, and Conexant onboard audio chips that can be found on motherboards these days, with "HDMI Audio" which isn't even a technical term for anything. If a manual or whatever says "HD Audio works out of the box."

After a recent update, HDMI/DP audio became unusable for me. Everything is very loud and cracking, with no volume control at all. Turns out it's a sound bugin kernel 5.4.3. Workarounds: Downgrade to 5.4.2 Switch to the testing repo and upgrade to 5.4.4 Wait for at least 5.5-rc3 and use linux-mainline. Build your own linux-mainlinewith this patch.

Trying to do it from cache reports nvidia-utils in dependancy conflict. As far as I remember, you have to downgrade the kernel too, not just nvidia. You can add a downgrade repo to your /etc/pacman.conf:

Basically, 470/570 and higher don't do HDMI multichannel, only SPDIF-level audio like other cards before (and what ATI did with their 2000 and 3000 series). 460/560 and below do multichannel HDMI and HD bitstreaming.
