I recently got my surround system repaired, and have it connected to my TV by HDMI ARC. The ARC bit is working but I only seem to be getting stereo audio from Windows. No, my AVreciever is pretty old but has nice sound (around 10 years old, name is Sony Quadral), no HDMI, but SPDIF is there. And my surround sound system shows 5.1 if I play with my Xbox 360, so the TV sends 5.1 sound that is comming from my 360 via hdmi to my sound system via optical cable / SPDIF and that is working.
