Currently i'm on Nvidia driver 361.** on a ubuntu version. Also Tested 368,351,358,364 version.Nothing fixes my issue with Linux driver. I'm using Strix GTX 960 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS fully updated with latest kernel. In windows if i install Nvidia driver,HDMI audio just works fine. But in Linux it doesn't gives any audio output.

Open the audio mixer (it's called pavucontrol here) Switch to the Configuration tab (rightmost tab), There is a dropdown for selecting the profile for the builtin audio device. Here I could select a HDMI profile, just be careful to pick one that is not marked as not available. After that, audio through HDMI worked just fine.

Click the Recording tab then Right Click the Sterio Mix Realtek HD Audio Icon. Go to Properties then click the Listen Tab. Check the Box - Listen to this Device and make it your Default Playback Device. Advanced Tab check both boxes allow control and give priority.
