Plenty of headroom, and I never heard drums sound this good with just pre's and no effects added. I have used it in both my home studio and live recording situations with no complaints yet and was really surprised at how great it worked when I recorded a 25 member choir. I have yet to find any major issue with this unit yet and don't expect to.

The M-Audio Octane is a straightforward and well-thought-out product that has no obvious shortcomings other than perhaps its less than generous maximum preamp gain of 50dB and the bunched-up gain-control law. It is cheaper than the nearest equivalent Presonus model, but still over twice the UK price of Behringer's offering in this area.

So, if you have an M-audio octane or are looking to buy an Octane be careful about the condensers you use. Anything less than 200 ohms will more than likely cause you a very annoying buzz or a 15 min. warm up time for the noise to go away. Features M-S matrix feature is nice in theory but I have not fully tested it yet.
