If its a add-on sound card,then if its just been added to the pc,then you. need to disable the on-board sound in the BIOS.If thats been done,reinstall it. to another PCI slot.I doubt that xp cant use or run any sound card,most cards. run on microsoft drivers of 2001 era.

the ati driver is wrong for your set up goto their web site http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx completely remove the old driver before the reinstall start>control panel > add/remove programs after you un install the grafficks card take note to see if sound is back remember to reset your settings onthe sound back to where they were .
