So i have heard mention of the ability to get positional audio and eax going with openal for onboard sound but I haven't figured out how to actually install openal. I have tried Creative's v1.1 installer but it didn't seem to work. If someone could detail how to actually setup positional audio, and eax, for realtek onboard, in Thief it would be ...
Sound problems caused by EAX? | Forums

It seems that Assassin's Creed for the PC uses EAX version 4 for special sound effects. A lot of sound cards (especially the onboard devices, such as Realtek's) do not support this version of EAX. I suspect that this incompatibility is what is causing many of the sound problems reported in this forum.

24-bit sound, EAX support, special hardware support for certain audio codecs. I kind of would lean towards the dedicated just to have the EAX compatibility since that's proprietary last time I looked. However, if the onboard has a better quality chip and the build quality isn't terrible, it may sound better.

FMOD is an audio API that primarily does audio on the CPU but can access EAX features and offload to audio hardware. Some examples of FMOD using EAX would be Cryostasis and the first BioShock. You may notice that both of those games mention OpenAL. What is likely happening is that FMOD is leveraging OpenAL to access EAX 4/5 features.
Would a old Soundblaster Audigy 2 be better ... - H]ard|Forum
https://hardforum.com/threads/would-a-old-soundblaster-audigy-2-be-better-than-my-onboard-realtek-alc889a.1452863/
the Audigy 2 will offer a number of advantages over your onboard audio: - EAX support for EAX 3 and 4 - DDL encoding for 5.1 output (it can do 6.1, but not via DDL) - reduced issue of EMI/RFI (if you have no problem with this with the onboard, strike this point) - more inputs/better inputs (very likely to have a better mic preamp/in, as an example)
