Going from onboard audio to a stand alone sound card is an improvement if you get a good one. The onboard cards usually suck with settings as well. Onboard audio is generally very low quality; you would likely hear a large difference between integrated audio and even a cheap solution like the Fiio E10. If you don't need an amp, I found the Hifimediy Sabre dac to be a night and day improvement from integrated for cheap.

Sounds kind of run together now, there’s less airiness and less instrument separation. The smoothness and silkiness that I got used to on ST is gone.
