I could mute it manually via alsamixer, and store everything just fine with alsactl, and all my mixer values were restored on reboot just fine. S/PDIF stays output remains off right up until gnome loads. I presume that pulseaudio does 'something' to my mixer settings, but I have not been able to determine what that 'something' actually is.
