You should have no problem at all going 50' with coax. Any decent 75ohm coax should be able to handle SPDIF at that distance. That's really not very far, and SPDIF is not very high bandwidth. You should be able to go hundreds of feet with reasonably good coax, and much farther on really good coax with SPDIF.
