HD Audio is the superior choice. Whichever is connected, the other can just hang. That's how mine is. The real trick is in BIOS. Advanced tab > Onboard Devices > HD Audio Controller should be enabled, and probably is if the rear panel sockets work. The Front Panel type should be set to match the plug connected to the Audio header.
