Also on my audio device itself, the status is 'Paired'. It's also important to know that the audio device itself is working fine, and I can play music via Bluetooth e.g. when I connect it to my phone. However, even though it appears to be connected, I can't play audio from my laptop.

Paired bluetooth speaker is not listed as an audio device I have paired my Windows 8.1 PC with a bluetooth speaker. My "PC and Devices -> Bluetooth" page listed the device by its product name, says "Paired" and shows an icon of a headset.
