Thanks to all of you on the forum. I also got a Viera and found out the hard way about the step down from 5.1 to stereo for inputs with 5.1/DD. The other thing to note is that, for DD audio generated by the TV's apps (Netflix, etc.), the built in optical audio out does output DD.
