PCM=Pulse Code Modulation (outputs in 2 channel stereo) I'm sure someone will be able to give you a far more technical answer but the quick answer is, unless you set your DVD's audio output to RAW(Bitstream) you will not be able to output 5.1 via digital co-ax/optical cable to an AV Amp/Receiver for surround sound (5.1/DTS).

In PCM, the volume is lower but sounds much cleaner and uses dolby pro logic. The sub isn't as loud as I'd like it to be though. I guess I answered my own question, lol.
