audio - Why do Pidgin sounds change the volume of music ...
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/234047/why-do-pidgin-sounds-change-the-volume-of-music-for-their-duration
PulseAudio is setup with defaults. I use Pidgin as my instant messenger. I am currently using Clementine as my music player. When I receive a message via Pidgin, the sound it plays causes the volume of my music to change for the duration of the message and there is obvious distortion happening during the change back.

pulseaudio -k pulseaudio --start I started music in Chrome and sent myself an IM in Pidgin. No pops! An email came through and Thunderbird and a notification sound played. No pops there, either! GNOME 3 was a bit unhappy at my PulseAudio tinkering and the volume control disappeared from the menu at the top right.

My guess (based on my solution to what I'm pretty sure is the same problem) is that some application is locking your sound device. Flash and Pidgin have both been culprits on my gentoo box. Try running fuser -v /dev/snd/*, and killing any processes listed there. This might be enough to get your sound working again.

A Moment of Zen: PulseAudio: A Solution In Search of a Problem
https://jeffreystedfast.blogspot.com/2008/06/pulseaudio-solution-in-search-of.html
I don't remember the exact order of things, but I did watch an episode of Harsh Realm in Xine while also IM'ing some friends in Pidgin, but the sound was so low I could barely hear anything. So a friend on IRC suggested I kill pulseaudio and restart it as this supposedly would help fix the "wonkyness" (evidently I'm not the only one with ...

I'm very happy with my Arch desktop right now, but I've noticed that my ALSA/Pulseaudio setup had high latency (obviously, but the Pidgin bleep has a 4-6 second delay, so one might say _very_ high). I've done some reading, notably: Arch Wiki - Sound System . Arch Wiki - OSSv4 (comparison with ALSA) Debian Forums - On ALSA, OSSv4 and Pulse
