After Microsoft Update installed the Oct 11 updates on my Windows 7 x64 machine, I can no longer play avi or mkv files in Media Center that contain AC3 (either DTS or Dolby) audio. Media Center reports that it is unable to play the file. Interestingly, the files still play fine in Windows Media Player - both 32-bit and 64-bit.

I am able to play AVI files which contain AC-3 audio in Windows Media Player. I assume that it is using the external AC3Filter to do this. I am writing an ASF muxer which writes the audio as AC-3. The resulting WMV/ASF file plays OK in "Media Player Classic Home Cinema" which is using AC3Filter to decode the AC-3 audio.

Try play with MPC or MPCHC, just put both files in same folder and name them like video.avi and video.ac3. Play with MPC. Then see if you change audio in mpc while playing. Or use virtualdubmod to add the ac3 to the avi, open avi, choose video->direct stream copy, under streams add the ac3, save as a new avi.
