I bought Polk Monitor Series 11T speakers 30 years ago. I assumed they were not up to snuff compared to speakers you can buy for comparable prices today, but listened to some music on them using a decent 2-channel amp and they sounded better than I expected. Converting the $950 I paid for the pair in 1987 is equivalent to $2,100 today.
