First off, make sure the polk speakers are getting power, either from batteries or from beeing plugged into the wall. If these speakers have a seperate subwoofer to them make sure the sub woofer is the thing plugged into the computer and the speakers are plugged into the subwoofer and the sub woofer is plugged into the wall.

If they don't, then it is quite possible that the 'Realtek' speakers are actually the install for the Polk speakers... so you'd have to unplug the Polk speakers again, and this time Uninstall the (driver for the) Realtek speakers, then restart the computer, then plug the Polk speakers in again... and check in Device Manager again as to what shows up, Polk or Realtek or neither.

Wonder if what affected the old speakers also affected the speaker output levels of your computer. You can also buy a addin sound card and disable the on-board one or replace the card if the system already has a addin sound card. 1st I would check with Polk as there may be a known issue. Ask them if the speakers you have normally need an amp.

I am between the Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 and my previous used speakers the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. The sound card if i used the Klipsch would be the Sound Blaster THX which has gotten amazing reviews.
