I had experience with many speakers from different brand names. Monitor 50 from Polk Audio are pretty good for movies, I'm sure they designed for movies, powerful enough with good bass, decent middle range and acceptable highs. If you need more bass you can just add subwoofer. But for music-I wouldn't recommend these speakers.

I listened to all of the Polk Audio Monitor lines at a local retailer, and I can tell you the 50 gives you the biggest bang for your buck. The bigger, more expensive ones all use the same tweeter, which is what gives you the crisp vocals and the clear sounds when listening to music, so the only thing you will gain by purchasing the more expensive models is more bass.

The Polk Audio Monitor 50 loudspeakers are one of Polk's lower-cost floor-standing speakers, but don't let the low price fool you. The Polk Audio Monitor 50 is one of the best sounding speakers for the price around. $99 bucks each including shipping was a great deal. I even unplugged my sub because they give enough bass. Many reviewers do not agree about the bass but for me it has plenty, and I can move the sub to another room. I like bass you can hear and not neccesarily feel.

I'm not a huge fan of Polk's newer Monitor series. I had the Monitor 50's at one time for use as surrounds. They were decent in this regard. For fun, I tried running them as fronts and was not impressed. For first time buyers, especially those on a budget, they aren't bad at all. You could definitely do a lot worse.
