The difficulty is that the speakers are not self-powered, meaning they don't contain an audio amplifier. The original H-P sound card had the amplifier and when you use the speakers with another computer's sound card there isn't anything to provide the power. Go into Device Manager, open the page for the polk speakers device (by double-clicking on the entry for the polk speakers, if there is one), and go to the Drivers tab, and click on Uninstall. Then turn Off the speakers, and unplug their USB cable from the computer.

Wonder if what affected the old speakers also affected the speaker output levels of your computer. You can also buy a addin sound card and disable the on-board one or replace the card if the system already has a addin sound card. 1st I would check with Polk as there may be a known issue. Ask them if the speakers you have normally need an amp.

I am between the Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 and my previous used speakers the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. The sound card if i used the Klipsch would be the Sound Blaster THX which has gotten amazing reviews.

Polk made some excellent computer speakers some years back. Hewlett-Packard computers came with them standard for a while. This was back when everyone was using CRT monitors to show you how long ago this was. Those are all over eBay now. Problem is the Hewlett-Packard computers had sound cards with amplifiers built in.
