IMO JL makes better amps, but I think Polk audio has them beat as far as component speakers. If you compare entry level models of both brands, the JL should easily be better than the Polks Db's in mid bass performance and maybe have better power handling. If you go up to the MM model,then things change and maybe those can be compared fairly to the JL entry level speakers. So it's pretty much Polk MM > JL TR series

To me so far, Polk sound pretty good (I also have db651 in another car, and have liked those, though the mids seem to be lacking somewhat). JL sound pretty good too, a bit fuller voice that may help me get by without a sub for a while. Focals sound quite clear, and are the ones recommended by 2 different car audio dealers (none of them sell Polks).

I have narrowed down my choice to Polk MM6501 ($199), JL Audio C5-650 ($289) and Focal 165V1 ($249). Unfortunately none of the pairs are available for listening in one location, so it is difficult to compare them.

The rumor about Focals being too bright is very true... at +0dB. DEH-P8600MP, TS-D720Cs, TS-SW2501D4 @ 2, PRS-D4200F/1200M. JL 0/1, Stinger SHI RCAs. if you can get those jl c5 comps that cheap i would probably go with those. if not get the focals. but with all 3 choices you cant really go wrong.
