I bought this PS3 in 2009 after my original one died from infamous YLoD, and have been having major problems with it recently. Whenever I've gone to play it in the last few weeks, the audio starts up fine, but over the course of a few minutes, it gets really crackly/staticy.

That will make your home theater output 2.0 audio but there will be 0% chance of encoding problems as the audio will be already raw data.
