What are Audio Taper Potentiometers?
http://www.learningaboutelectronics.com/Articles/What-are-audio-taper-potentiometers
Audio Taper Potentiometers are log tapers, which are potentiometers that change resistance logarithmically as you turn the wiper. This is crucial for audio applications because logarithmic change in resistance, not …

If however, the pot were logarithmic, the spacing on the knob between 0.1W and 1W, 1W and 10W, and 10W and 100W would all be the same. If there were ten marks, evenly spaced, we'd have something like: 0, 1mmw, 10mmw …

https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/304692/formula-for-logarithmic-audio-taper-pot
Let 'a' be the potmeter's setting (from 0 to 1). 'H' is the transfer function (implemented in software, of course). H = a / (1 + (1 - a) * K) With K = 2 this provides a really nice approximation of a log function, with a value of 0.25 at 'a' = 0.5. For 0.1 (0.125, actually) as a half-way value, the following works nicely:

connecting the pot to an analogue meter and sweeping from end to end will show whether it`s log or lin. You don't even need to go that far. Set to approx 1/2 travel and measure one side. Linear will be near 50% - log very much not. (You must log in or sign up to reply here.) Ask a Question Want to reply to this thread or ask your own question?
Audio or linear taper pots? What’s the ... - Hoagland Custom

An audio taper pot increases the signal logarithmic manner. At “1”, “2”, or even “3” on the volume knob, you may get no increase in volume at all. The vast majority of the volume increase comes between “4” and “8”. After “8”, there is very little signal increase but, in car radios, stereos and the like, a LOT of clipping and signal distortion.

Re: Audio log or linear taper tone pots? There's no difference when they are all the way up. Generally speaking, you use log taper for volume, linear for tone. Th differnce is subtle. Log taper pots produce a more uniform reduction in perceived volume while linears may show a more pronounced drop in one half of the pots sweep.
