I’ve just built a new HTPC system and I can’t get any sound out of the digital optical output (toslink/spdif) when playing Bluray. If I change the audio properties in PowerDVD to output stereo via HDMI, the sound comes out of the TV and the PC (via headphone socket) OK, but I can’t get anything out of the digital 7.1 connection.

PowerDVD, with no disc playing, allows the SPDIF setting to be selected. However, the two options that appear when it is selected are grayed out. Replied on May 12, 2016. In reply to John W [MSFT]'s post on August 18, 2015. and with insider build 14342 this issue still exists. Sound will start, then 3 servicies will stop: Windows Audio Service, Windows Event Log and Security Center, run the troubleshooter, and things will work, and a bit later the services will stop again.

Also choosing the SPDIF option in PowerDVD kills all sounds and chops up the video from start to finish. Also tell me if this makes sense, I supposedly have up to 8 audio channels, but the Properties tab of my audio devices (speakers and SPDIF Out) only give me 2 channels options (bits range from 16 and up, and Khz from 44 to 96)

PowerDVD turn off the spdif output during playback if I use under Vista. The same PowerDVD works welll under XP SP2. The problem I think is sound card drivers and how they operate with Vista Audio APIs. Where PowerDVD and VLC fail in Vista, ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre succeeds with SPDIF output (for me at least).
