From your post, I suppose the audio is set to automatic and that may be the reason the audio plays automatically in presentation mode. In PowerPoint for the web, we have two option two choose from: Automatically: Plays automatically once you advance to the slide that the audio file is on. When Clicked On: Plays audio only when the icon is clicked on.

The PowerPoint Web App never supported sound. However, if you'd like to view a PowerPoint presentation with sound (and don't have the Microsoft PowerPoint desktop application) you can always use the PowerPoint Viewer .
