What Are Preamp Outputs on the Car Stereo? – Improve Car Audio
https://improvecaraudio.com/what-are-preamp-outputs-on-the-car-stereo/
A preamp output is an additional channel on your car stereo that you can use to connect an amplifier, equalizer, or sound processor. Although you should use a direct one-to-one connection between the output and input in the amplifier, you can use a “Y” cable to split the signal.
Preamp Output Voltage - Basic Car Audio Electronics

In recent years, the audio manufacturers started using op-amps that could swing very close to the full supply voltage. This means that their peak-peak output voltage is very close to 9 volts. This means that their RMS output voltage can be as high as 35% of the regulated voltage. With a regulated voltage of 9 volts, they can get 3.15 volts out.

Preamp voltage is somewhat important if you're running long RCAs from the front to the back of your install. If you have 12-foot+ RCA's, I would like something more than 2V pre-outs to prevent too much voltage drop. The more you have to turn up the gain on your amps, the more chance of noise being introduced, hence the higher pre-out voltage.
Amplifier Power and Voltage - Car Audio Help
http://www.caraudiohelp.com/newsletter/amplifier_power_and_voltage.html
Amplifier Power and Voltage . Did you know your vehicle's charging voltage can affect the power output from many car audio amplifiers? Many car audio amplifiers have what is called an unregulated power supply. The power supply is what converts the vehicle's charging voltage into power that the amplifier can use.

The whole output voltage phenomenon is a marketing scam designed to ensnare the ignorant. Just avoid running interconnects at unnecessarily low voltages (low output on HU, high gain on amps, for example) and you shouldn't have noise problems. The proper way to solve this problem, if it existed in a car environment, is with a balanced line.

The lower the output voltage the higher you will have to turn up the preamp to achieve the same volume as one with more voltage. And you will probably hear more noise from the amp and or preamp when the volume is turned way up. jeffreybehr.
Amplifier Voltage Gain Explained – Matching Amp to …
https://www.audioholics.com/audio-amplifier/amplifier-voltage-gain
Every 6dB of gain equates to a doubling of voltage; as such, a hypothetical amplifier with a voltage gain of 30dB will increase voltage by 2^5, or by a factor of 32. For unbalanced inputs, the THX standard gain level is 29dB; utilizing balanced inputs decreases this to 23dB, though naturally the output of the preamp is boosted by 6dB under this ...
CAR AUDIO CALCULATORS | Apex Customs

A watt is an electrical unit which is generated or consumed. If you’re running a 100-watt amplifier, your amplifier is drawing 100 watts of electricity for every second its running. This calculator is intended to help you calculate the power levels of your car audio or lighting systems.

Most of the time i use a mute relay on the output of a preamp. The problem was at the turn off of the preamp. The mute relay would not turn off before the main and you get a turn off spike ore a thumb out of your speaker. So you could first turn off the power amplifier and than the preamp. But that would not be very WAF.
