The DLIII upsamples to either 24 Bit / 96 KHz or 24 Bit / 192 KHz. This upsampling helps reduce jitter by completely re-clocking the signal using PS Audio's own clock. PSA could have included an upsample bypass but that would have raised the price and negatively impacted the sound. Lower cost and better sound is never a bad thing in my book.

The DL III sidesteps the slewing problem by eliminating the I/V stage's feedback via a unique single transistor I/V converter that cannot slew. Digital Link III has more authority and bass (it is DC coupled design, no capacitor in signal path). Contrary to what PS Audio advertise, I did not find the Digital Link III warm, it was as detailed and as neutral as the DAC 1. Except this authority in music and more bass, I could not find any major difference.

PS Audio DL 3 DACs user reviews : 4.7 out of 5 - AudioReview
http://www.audioreview.com/product/digital-sources/dacs/ps-audio/dl-3.html
The sound of the DL-3 prior to the X-10D was very clean and detailed. It uses a Burr-Brown 20 bit dac which is known for good low level detail. Although it claims to have a Class A output stage already, I did notice a significant smoothing of female vocals after adding the X-10D, perhaps at a loss of some soundstage depth.

That TI was a former Burr Brown chip. But, as Paul (PS Audio) has always noted, it isn’t the processor as much as the output circuitry/stage that has a more significant effect, and that is where Paul concentrates his DAC designs. The Digital III has a Fet based output, which IMO is a good thing. Try it, see if it is an improvement.
