It is a very quiet low frequency sound. If memory serves, PS Audio borrowed the fan set up from Audio Research as their tube amps need fans and they admired the effectiveness of the fans on the circuitry while running so quietly. I don't know if this helps, but I had a Premier Power Plant before trading it in on the P5.

The P5 cannot handle the current demands of even one JC 1 power amp. Plugging in the right side JC 1 caused the sound stage to collapse with a loss of speed, detail and articulation in the bass. Plugging in the left side JC 1 caused the P5 to go into protection mode and shut down. I let the P5 warm up for 24 hours prior to installation.

I have a P5 in both my HT and my 2 channel system. In the 2 channel, I have a Bryston 4B SST2 amp and 2 PS Audio Powerbases plugged into the P5, with a Bryston BP26 pre-pro and a Perfectwave Dac plugged into the Powerbases. System sounds great. Have never noticed any compression and the fan in P5 has never come on.
