If your Monitor can support Audio at all, the PS3 should be able to use that using HDMI. Not all monitors have Speakers and some that do are so bad that it's not worth using. You can buy cheaply adaptors that will convert a Stereo 3.5mm Jack to a Stereo RCA Pair. Most of the cables I've got was intended to plug a hi-fi equipment in to a computer.

What it does is allow you to use your 3.5mm jack headphones split for a PC, in the USB port of the PS3. The microphone portion is what will work and allow chat, but to get game sound, you will need to pull the sound output wires on the PS component cable for the TV, and get other adapters to get game sound. A convoluted mess, is what it becomes.
