Mar 2012. There was another thread (might have even been another forum) where a poster had a similar problem with the PS3 and AVI audio sync. Some had audio sync issues, while some wouldn't play at all. For reasons I don't understand remuxing the AVIs (resaving them as new AVIs without re-encoding) using AVI-MuxGUI fixed the problem.
