If none of the above works, try forcing the PS3 to re-do its auto-detect by holding down the power button when you power it back up (wait for the second beep). It should say "multichannel PCM" or something similar. The PS3 sends out all game audio over HDMI that way. If it doesn't, then that means the output settings in your sound settings menu are incorrectly (de)selected. If your PS3 were working, I would say do a re-set and see what the PS3 automatically selects as viable audio options.

The problem is I cant get it to decode DTS sound from dvd's and blu rays played on the PS3. The unit definately supports DTS as i tried a dvd in the units dvd player which had both DD and DTS sound and both played fine. When I tried the same dvd in the ps3 only the DD sound plays. I can get it to play a dts disc in 2 channels but thats about it.

Pop in the cd, turn down the volume, check for music, than crank it. Let us know. If your reciever can decode DTS, and the "CD" is dts, and the ps3 supports DTS (Which it does), and your settings are correct (as per above) you should have no trouble listening to 5.1 audio.
