The problem i think is that some HDMI devices can send audio and video and some cannot. Your amp can allow certain sound signals to "pass through" but it cannot process certain types of sound signal. In the ps3 go to your settings and in the audio settings select only the non HD sound types. Set the ps3 to output bitstream and see how the sound is.
