You need to use the HDMI connection to get the lossless audio formats from BD/PS3. With the optical cable you will only get the "core" audio formats such as are standard on DVD. Also, to get the 1024p video from the PS3 you need to use the HDMI cable anyway, plus you need one for your TV.
