The PS3 Media Server buffer is not large enough (max of 400Mb), and it also seems seems to completely empty sometimes before any new material is added, which will cause a temporary lag. Depending on the format of the videos your watching, the Media Server has to transcode the video in a format the PS3 will understand.

I suspect the problem is that A/V goes out of sync, which causes the skipping, because I tried the same files with the older PS3 Media Server, and though it doesn't skip, the A/V goes out of sync after a short while. On the mkv container I can enable internal subtitles on my TV when not transcoding, but I can't with external srt subs.
