No this is not correct. For digital surround sound via spdif it needs to be set to BITSTREAM. Also be sure your sound jsetting is set to FIBER OPTIC or DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (can't remember which my ps3 calls it). So you need to set the ps3 to BITSTREAM for any digital audio via normal dvd be it dts or dd5.1.

The PS3 will not play DTS from files, only from authored optical discs. You can either author it to two AVCHD authored dual layer DVD blanks, or to a bluray blank. Otherwise you will have to convert the audio to AC3.

PS3 can not play .dts (if .mkv has that) audio unless on physical disc. In the case you can re-encode .dts to .ac3 and then add .ac3 to original file while muxing to .m2ts. File will then have both audios and play everywhere.
