Most receivers default to sound over HDMI , because optical cannot carry the new HD audio codecs. The HD codecs are uncompressed ,and the optical interface ( or co-ax , which has the same limitations )cannot carry this much data. Dont know where you heard that sound over optical was better , but its just not true.

The settings on the PS3 are to send sound out via Digital Out (optical) with the Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 boxes checked (as well as the 2 default 2-channel linear PCM selections). Receiver won't light up Dolby or DTS, nor play any sound through XBL, DVD, or game. The receiver is configured to accept the optical input on the Video 1 source.
