What is the meaning of fragments and fragment_size in ...
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/477463/what-is-the-meaning-of-fragments-and-fragment-size-in-pulseaudio-alsa-modules
Following advice on a blog post called Pulseaudio And Latency, I tried loading module-alsa-sink with special fragments and fragment_size parameters to ensure low latency. However, I'm not sure what exactly these are doing. The latency reported by pactl list sinks doesn't have an obvious correspondence to the values I put in these parameters. Here's a short script I …

The number of fragments to be used in the sink and source buffers. I also have a slightly modified daemon.conf for PulseAudio: default-fragments & default-fragment-size-msec are both set to 4. With this setup I'm finally able to have sound in both the Host Ubuntu OS and (non-choppy & non-stuttering sound) in a Windows XP Professional (32 bit) virtual machine.

I've been following the PulseAudio troubleshooting wiki page to see if I could fix it, but alas no. The thing that made me curious is on the wiki page it tells me to calculate my fragment size in msecs + number of fragments. The example output from pactl list sinks on the wiki shows: device.buffering.buffer_size = "352800"
PulseAudio Configuration | Linux Sound
https://linuxsound.wordpress.com/2011/03/29/pulseaudio-configuration/
There are 3 places to change the configuration parameters and behavior of PulseAudio. system.pa/default.pa – startup script to specify module loading, etc, module parameters are passed here, more on that later. client.conf – does just what is says, config file for clients. daemon.conf – configuration specific to the sound server daemon.

I want to post an update on this issue. After more extended testing with the configuration from Ubuntu (default-fragments 8, default-fragment-size-msec 10), I have reverted to the original recommendation I made in the first post, which is just to use default-fragment-size-msec = 5 and no other changes in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf. This seems to work the most …
