Ever since f11e7a8, the recent commit that brings the a52 plugin up to speed with ffmpeg's requirement for s32le format sampling, sending any audio to plug:a52 from any pulseaudio client crashes pulseaudio. I posted this log earlier in #23, in which audio from mpv crashes pulseaudio. I have tried other clients since and they all crash the same way.

But a52-plugin would be of use if you redirect the hdmi sound output to a decoder which only has a toslink/ S-PDIF interface. It is easier and much cheaper to buy an adapter from hdmi to toslink than to find a new amplifier supporting virtual souround for headphones.

The only configuration I could find to activate the 1.1.7 version of the plugin (built against ffmpeg with libavresample) was this: pcm.a52 { type a52 } This created iec958-ac3-surround sinks, but none were usable. If such a profile were configured, pulseaudio would suffer thousands of underruns per second.

The packages that were causing issues were alsa-plugins and ffmpeg. alsa-plugins-1.2.2 causes stuttering problems with a52 for some odd reason with ffmpeg-4.3.2 and would be completely silent with ffmpeg-4.4. My solution was to unmask alsa-plugins-1.2.5 and to use ffmpeg-4.3.2 and I was surprised to hear my sound system finally working
