[SOLVED] why isn't pulseaudio switching to "alternate ...
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=227519
As i understood, the config option alternate-sample-rate should make pulseaudio switch to a different sample-rate when there is only a stream connected to the output that matches that value. I prefer to keep the default to 44100 to hear music and just switch to 48000 when i watch movies.

Alternate sample rates - Arun Raghavan
https://arunraghavan.net/2011/10/alternate-sample-rates/
The default value for the alternate sample rate is 48 kHz. So if you’re playing a movie off a DVD where the audio track is typically a 48 kHz stream, and your card supports it, we switch to 48 kHz and avoid resampling altogether. Similarly, while making voice calls, common sample rates are 8, 16, and 32 kHz.
pulseaudio - Pulse Audio Changing Sample Rate on the Fly ...
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/569053/pulse-audio-changing-sample-rate-on-the-fly
Headphone out (mobo) Displayport audio out (amd gpu) Headphone output works if default-sample-rate = 44100 in .pulse/daemon.conf, whereas displayport only works if default-sample-rate = 48000. It does not seem that having alternate-sample-rate set to the alternative value of default-sample-rate makes any impact.
Setting different per-device sampling rates in pulseaudio?
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/500772/setting-different-per-device-sampling-rates-in-pulseaudio
default-sample-rate = 44100 alternate-sample-rate = 16000 and/or. avoid-resampling = yes if you have pulseaudio version >= 11. In Pulseaudio 13 there may be even more options, see here. I think it is good to make a bug report about this issue and link it in a comment.

I think the output sound should be normal even if have default sample rate 44100Hz (and 48000Hz as alternative sample rate). Then pulseaudio should resample the 16000Hz sample rate input to given sample rate using given resample method. You can see available resample methods by running pulseaudio --dump-resample-methods in terminal. You …

Configuring PulseAudio for Higher Quality Sound : linux
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/ftt5tx/configuring_pulseaudio_for_higher_quality_sound/
default-sample-rate = 48000, alternate-sample-rate = 44100: these are just the defaults, swapped, which should not matter for typical use cases. The only place in PulseAudio code where this matters is when an application tries to create a stream with a sample rate which is not divisible by either 4000 or 11025 Hz.
PulseAudio - LinuxReviews
https://linuxreviews.org/PulseAudio
PulseAudio can operate using two different sample-rates by configuring default-sample-rate = 44100 alternate-sample-rate = 48000 Some documentation indicate that this is supposedly good if you play some CD audio with a 44.1kHz sample-rate and some movies/musicvideos with a 48kHz sample-rate. It is not.
