I guess the actual sound device used by VLC is the one I can configure by opening VLC Media Player, in the sound options (I couldn't find a separate settings dialog for the VLC phonon backend itself). If so, VLC is by default configured to use the "default" sound device. If I change it, I can choose among pulseaudio server or the ALSA sound device.
