I even tried reinstalling pulseaudio. Whenever an audio is played on Pop OS 18.04 (a wrapper around Ubuntu mostly), a very irritating static background noise is present. As soon as the audio stops, the static lingers around for a few seconds before vanishing.

Opening pavucontrol changes the level from whatever it was at to around 53 which makes the noise quieter, changing it lower makes the static sound inaudible. Changing the setting in pavucontrol also affects how loud the static noise is.

How do I REMOVE the permanent configuration? I did sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa pulseaudio sox and then re-installed, but still my application (firefox) selects "Monitor of device" as input source, and when I select another source in pulseaudio it won't change it :(.
