According to the owner's manual, this mode (1) disables the video signal output; (2) turns off the display; and (3) bypasses the bass and treble controls. In fact to ears more used to hearing their sounds enhanced, the music is likely to sound on the flat side. With my Onkyo 696 and being a bit old school I like my stereo music to sound as it should. That said with my 66yo ears, I can't hear any difference between Pure with display off or Direct with it on, so I go the latter.

I’m using Pure Audio setting when listen to music which means the Subs Is not used and can’t be enabled, I’m getting good bass response from my fronts but would like a bit more. The only way I can get the fronts and to work together is using the Stereo Option. However I can’t get it to sound like the pure option.
