Re: UA 1176 reissue vs. Purple Audio MC77. Bad luck, lots of the linked references are gone. However, the early serial numbers up until 2002 that were supposedly correct go up to #1900. Then you enter the "dark ages" until about #2950 and subsequent to that, the correct attenuators were back into the production line.

I just got 1047 hits showing 500 threads, upon going to the search button and typing "purple mc77". I wonder what would happen when I typed "UA 1176LN" or other 1176 iteration [there were many]. Personally, I feel as though the Purple MC77's design is superior to the new reissue box, in my opinion.

Re: UA 1176 reissue vs. Purple Audio MC77. can't speak for the UA reissues, but when comparing my Purple with my Blackface ( an amazing sounding one) the original Urei takes the cake every time. Specifically: - under compression, the Urei stays transparant way better than the Purple. Bringing up ghost notes on a snare is more effective.

The MC77 was definitely a bit more "hifi" than the Rev D and the MC76 but FWIW either Purple gets you close to the 1176 blackface vibe for a fraction of what the UREI units are going for. The reissue was pretty bland.

How do you take a legendary compressor like the 1176 and not only do it justice but improve on it? This was the vision behind the MC77 created by Purple Audio in the late nineties. It all started with an exacting recreation of the “E” revision of one of the most iconic solid-state limiting amplifiers of all time.

Andrew Roberts started Purple Audio and came out with the MC76 limiting amplifier in 1997. Informed by Andrew's years as a tech, the MC76 implemented the classic UREI 1176 Revision E compression circuit using modern components and beefy build quality (see Tape Op #117's Behind The Gear interview). In 2002, Andrew released the MC77, adding some welcome …

Feb 3, 2012. #3. I would think that you might have a chance of living close to some shop that can let you borrow the Distressor for a trial or, at worst, half the studios close to you have one and you could pay them $50 or whatever to track/listen to it. Finding a Purple MC77 will be tougher - definitely harder to get a hold of a temp/trial one.
